Fukuoka City announced on the 19th that it mistakenly collected about 16.23 million yen in sewage fees over 32 years from a communal housing building, despite it having a septic tank system and not being connected to the sewage system. This billing error occurred due to staff misunderstandings at the time, even though a “Septic Tank Installation Notification” had been submitted. The city discovered this error during an October field survey and is now conducting a thorough review to avoid similar mistakes. The housing, built in July 1991, was wrongly charged sewage fees up to November this year. Of the 93 affected residents, including those who have moved, 57 still have the right to claim refunds. The city will refund these residents approximately 11.55 million yen, which includes the principal amount for the last 20 years and an interest equivalent of about 1.25 million yen. The claim rights for the remaining 36 residents have expired under national and civil law provisions. Source: RKB
