35-Meter Timeline Showcasing Tenjin’s 400-Year History Unveiled

A 35-meter-long historical timeline, “Tenjin History Timeline,” will be installed along the eastern outer wall of the underground passage in ONE FUKUOKA BLDG., set to open on April 24. The exhibit, open to the public from February 22, chronicles Tenjin’s transformation from its origins in 1612, when Fukuoka’s first feudal lord, Nagamasa Kuroda, relocated Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine, marking the beginning of the area known as Tenjin.

The timeline, supervised by modern history researcher Keiichiro Masuda, visually presents Tenjin’s growth with rare photographs and historical maps, covering key milestones such as the opening of Fukuoka Prefectural Government Offices during the Meiji era, the expansion of major roads like Meiji-dori and Watanabe-dori, and the launch of tram services by Fukuhaku Electric Railway and Hakata Electric Railway. It also highlights the post-war era, which saw Tenjin develop into Kyushu’s largest commercial and business district.

In addition to the static display, a large digital screen will showcase the area’s evolution from 2000 onward through video content. Nishitetsu, which is leading this initiative, aims to preserve Tenjin’s urban heritage and inspire appreciation for its ongoing transformation under the Tenjin Big Bang redevelopment project. The timeline is expected to attract visitors, encouraging them to reflect on Tenjin’s rich history while anticipating its future.
