With the number of accidents involving cars hitting children going to or from school rising nationwide, the Nishinippon Shimbun conducted a survey of those roads in Kyushu. They found that as of March 2011, only 40% of the roads had sidewalks. The national average is 41%, but three Kyushu prefectures were below that: Fukuoka Prefecture at 37%, Kumamoto Prefecture at 32%, and Oita Prefecture at 37%.
