It was announced on Nov. 15 that Yaskawa Electric Corporation, TOTO Ltd., Paramount Bed Co., Ltd, and Kitakyushu City will join forces to begin research into new forms of welfare equipment. Kitakyushu hopes to use its status as a National Strategy Special Zone to develop advanced nursing care technology, which will facilitate the creation of innovative products and services. Technology produced by the three manufacturers involved in the venture recently went on display at a booth in the West Japan International Welfare Equipment Exhibition, which started in Kitakyushu City on Nov. 16. Some of the latest developments from the companies involved include a remote-controlled device that can assist with mobility from Yaskawa, as well as a TOTO toilet seat that can adjust its distance from the ground to help people sit down. The area is gaining a reputation in this kind of research with the Kitakyushu City Robot Care Development Consortium, which consists of 32 companies and organizations, actively trying to explore how technology can be used in the field of nursing.
