A collaborative research group, led by Professor Yuji Sugihara of Kyushu University, is pioneering a new flood prediction technology using AI and atmospheric data. This innovative approach integrates data on the amount of water vapor flowing over Kyushu, observed from stations on Fukue Island in Nagasaki and Shimokoshiki Island in Kagoshima, with satellite meteorological data. The project aims to refine flood predictions for rivers such as the Chikugo and Kuma by allowing AI to learn from these data points. Already underway, this three-year research endeavor has completed its equipment setup on Shimokoshiki Island. Professor Sugihara believes this AI-enhanced forecasting could significantly contribute to building a safer society. Source: Kyushu University / NHK
