All Japanese Prefectures Record Population Dip, Except Fukuoka

Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications announced the results of the population dynamics survey on the 26th. For the first time since the survey’s inception, all prefectures saw a population decline, while the city of Fukuoka topped the list of municipal population growth nationwide.

According to the ministry, the total population of Japanese nationals as of January 1 this year was approximately 122.42 million, a decrease of over 800,000 compared to the previous year. This marks a 14-year consecutive decline, and the decrease is the largest since the survey began.

This is the first time all 47 prefectures have experienced a population decline. However, considering the municipal level, Fukuoka city’s population, including foreigners, ranked 5th nationwide at about 1.58 million. This is an increase of about 13,000 from the previous year, making it the municipality with the highest population growth in Japan. On the other hand, Kitakyushu city experienced the most significant population decrease nationwide, with a decline of 7,190 people compared to the previous year. Source: TNC
