Amazon Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of online retail goliath Amazon, will open a customer service center in Hakata Ward, Fukuoka this September. The company plans to hire several hundred people in the first year to answer customers’ e-mails and phone calls. This will be Amazon’s third center in Japan after Sapporo (opened in 2001) and Sendai (opened in 2012). According to an Amazon spokesperson, the company chose Fukuoka because the city is home to “many people who want to work locally for the long term” and “many people who can speak foreign languages”.
