Ariake Sea Red Tide Disrupts Bivalve Reproduction

The Saga Prefecture Maritime Promotion Center released the results of its survey showing that the so-called red tide, caused by harmful plankton, disrupts the breeding of bivalves in coastal areas. The red tide already has been shown to be harmful to small fish and crabs, sharply reducing their population. The phenomenon is thought to have passed its peak, but the center reports that red tide has been shown to be harmful even during its waning period.
