Auto Tax Scandal Grows in Fukuoka: New Data Leak Found

Fukuoka Prefecture has announced an additional potential data breach at an outsourced automobile tax call center, affecting around 30,000 more individuals. This follows the earlier confirmed leak of personal information of 133,655 taxpayers, linked to a former temporary employee at a subsidiary of NTT West Japan, who improperly disclosed about 9 million customer records. The new development concerns approximately 210,000 records previously unattributed, of which about 30,000 are identified as belonging to Fukuoka Prefecture. The leaked data includes names, phone numbers, postal codes, addresses, ages, and birth dates of taxpayers. The prefecture is expediting the process of identifying the affected individuals and plans to send apology postcards. There have been no reported damages from this breach yet. Tōmu Himukai, head of the Prefectural Taxation Division, expressed deep apologies for the significant distress and inconvenience caused to the citizens. Source: Fukuoka Prefecture / NHK
