The Beppu City Ryokan Hotel Association announced on August 27 that they will team up with Airbnb in an attempt to attract more overseas tourists into the area. There are currently 111 hotels and ryokan (Japanese inn) affiliated to the association. This is the first time that a local hotel association in Japan has established a formal agreement with Airbnb. A memorandum of understanding has been concluded, which will see local hotels and ryokan listed on the Airbnb website. The two organizations will also aim to develop tourism campaigns as part of the agreement. Oita Prefecture is expecting an influx of visitors ahead of the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
