Big Brewers Release More Kyushu-Themed Cans

On Oct. 2, Sapporo will begin offering its Mugi to Hoppu third category beer in a can touting Nagasaki’s nightscape. Commemorating the first anniversary of Nagasaki’s nightscape being ranked one of the top three in the world, the can will feature a map of viewing spots. According to Sapporo Holdings, the company has been offering beer cans with local labels since the Sapporo Winter Olympics in 1972, but Kyushu-themed labels didn’t start hitting the shelves until more recently, with a can commemorating the opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen and one celebrating the 100th anniversary of Moji Port’s Taisho Era architecture. Asahi Beer’s local beer cans include one celebrating the 1300th anniversary of the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters), initiated by Miyazaki Prefecture, and one celebrating Kumamoto City’s incorporation as a designated city. A manager from Asahi’s Kyushu Branch says the local beer cans “have a very strong appeal with customers.” Kirin beer also offer local labels on its low-malt Kirin Tanrei cans, citing them as “expensive but useful sales tools in regional areas”. The only major player without a local label is Suntory. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 9/25
