After a conducting a survey on June 3, Fukuoka City announced that the percentage of people voluntarily pushing their bicycles through the “push your bicycle zones” established this April has reached 53.7%. In response to a question by a city assemblyman, a city official was quoted as saying, “In the two months since we passed the ordinance, it appears to be effective to some degree, so we will continue awareness-raising efforts to increase the number of people pushing their bicycles.” The zones were established as part of the Bicycle Safety Ordinance that was passed in April. It was the first ordinance of its kind in Japan. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun, June 24
