Canadian Commended for Rescue

On May 9 the Central Police Station presented certificates of appreciation to four local men, including Canadian Alexis Glass (38), who rescued a man who had fallen into the sea. According to the police, a 62-year old visually impaired man accidentally fell off a pier at Izaki Fishing Port in Fukuhama at about 13:00 on 4/23. Alexis, who was riding his bicycle to work, saw the man and scaled down a ladder the pier to a nearby raft, where he was able to grab ahold of the fallen man. Soon thereafter, Yasuji Mori, a fisherman, ran over to help pull the man to safety. “I wasn’t scared because I was focused on helping the man. I am relieved he wasn’t hurt very badly,” said Alexis who visited the police station with Mr. Mori to receive his commendation. Nishinippon Shimbun 5/17
