The preliminary data of the 2020 national census revealed that Fukuoka City experienced a five-year population growth of 4.9%, the fastest rate among the ordinance-designated cities in Japan. The city’s population was 1,613,361 as of Oct. 2020, marking an increase of 74,680 compared to five years ago. The population growth rate in neighboring Fukutsu City also reached 14.2% and marked the most rapid in Fukuoka Prefecture. While twenty-two cities and towns in the prefecture saw population increases, thirty-eight other municipalities now have fewer people than five years ago.
