Japan’s Fisheries Agency seized a Chinese fishing vessel on February 12 within Japan’s exclusive economic zone about 165 kilometers southwest of Mejima Island in Goto, Nagasaki Prefecture. Officials said the vessel failed to comply with an order to stop for inspection and attempted to flee. The 47-year-old Chinese captain was arrested on suspicion of violating Japan’s fisheries sovereignty law. The trawler, reportedly capable of large catches of mackerel and horse mackerel, had 11 crew members on board. Authorities are investigating whether the vessel entered the EEZ for illegal fishing. The captain’s response has not been disclosed due to the ongoing investigation. Source: NHK / Asahi Shimbun
