Kyushu Electric to Close Two Thermal Plants by 2026

Kyushu Electric Power announced plans to shut down one thermal power plant each at Buzen and Kanda by 2026 due to aging infrastructure and difficulties in sourcing replacement parts. The Buzen plant, which has been idle since 2018, will be decommissioned in March 2026. Meanwhile, the coal-powered Kanda plant, inactive since July 2023, is set for closure in June 2026.

Despite these closures, the company assures there will be no impact on the region’s power supply. Kyushu Electric plans to shift focus to renewable energy, particularly solar and offshore wind power, as part of its commitment to reduce carbon emissions. Source: Kyushu Electric Power
