Compulsory Bicycle Insurance Considered for Fukuoka

Fukuoka Prefecture is considering to introduce regulations mandating compulsory bicycle insurance. Over 4,000 bicycle accidents occurred in the prefecture in 2018, including some cases in which riders had to pay expensive compensation for damaged objects or injured persons. To prepare for such cases as well as to promote safety, the prefecture will stress the importance of acquiring insurances from current “requires best endeavors” to “mandatory.” Compulsory bicycle insurance has been introduced in 11 prefectures nationwide including Kagoshima Prefecture.
