Conflicting Reports on Future of JR Kyushu’s Queen Beetle Ferry

Conflicting reports have emerged about the future of JR Kyushu’s Queen Beetle ferry, which has been suspended due to a water leakage cover-up scandal. While some outlets have claimed JR Kyushu plans to cease operations permanently and withdraw from the Hakata-Busan route, JR Kyushu President Yoji Furumiya denied this on December 13, stating the company is still discussing the possibility of resuming service.

The controversy stems from the Queen Beetle’s operational history, including incidents of concealed water leaks earlier this year. Despite allegations of tampering with safety sensors and falsifying records, JR Kyushu insists that efforts to enhance safety measures and repair the vessel are ongoing.

President Furumiya acknowledged the technical challenges involved, particularly the complexities of repairing the aluminum alloy structure of the ferry. He added that while withdrawing from the Japan-Korea route remains one option, the current focus is on restoring operations. The ferry remains suspended until at least January 31, 2025.
