COVID-19 Cluster In Kurume City Nightclub – Ten Test Positive Including Seven Foreigners

Fukuoka Prefecture announced 21 more confirmed cases of COVID-19 infections on Apr. 22, including a suspected cluster at a nightclub in Kurume City. The nightclub continued to operate after a closure request effective as of Apr. 14. A dancer (foreign resident), who tested positive on Apr. 21, reportedly worked at the nightclub even after she developed a fever on Apr. 12. Seventeen staff members who had close contact with her, ten (including seven foreigners) tested positive for COVID-19 on Apr. 22. Meanwhile, the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Japan, updated the definition of ‘close contact’ as related to COVID-19 infection on Apr. 20. According to the new guideline, engaging in conversations with an infected person without taking necessary preventional measures at a distance of approximately 1 meter or less, including the preceding two days from when symptoms appear, are at risk of infection. This latest guideline revision will require business operators and individual persons to review or change preventional measures.
