Daihatsu Kyushu, based in Nakatsu, Oita Prefecture, announced it would postpone the expansion of its engine plant in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture, that it had planned for FY 2009. Daihatsu’s mainstay compact and mini-car line was thought to be resistant to economic downturns, but sales have fallen in recent months and there is no outlook for an immediate recovery. The company also plans to cut back on production at its Nakatsu plant.
