Dazaifu Post Offices Become Cooling Shelters

In response to extreme summer heat, all eight post offices in Dazaifu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, have been designated as official “cooling shelters.” The agreement between the city and Japan Post was formalized on April 22, following a record-setting summer last year in which Dazaifu had 62 days with temperatures exceeding 35°C—more than any other city in Japan.

During business hours, the post offices will be open to anyone needing relief from the heat, including tourists and residents. These shelters are marked with light blue banners for easy identification.

Mayor Daizo Kusuda emphasized the importance of providing safe, air-conditioned spaces, especially in a city that receives many visitors to its cultural and religious sites. With the new additions, Dazaifu now has 25 official cooling shelter locations. Source: KBC
