The “Tobiume” plum tree at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in Fukuoka bloomed on February 14, more than a month later than last season. The tree, said to have flown overnight from Kyoto to Dazaifu in the Heian period out of loyalty to scholar Sugawara no Michizane, is a symbol of early spring. Visitors stopped to admire and photograph its delicate white blossoms despite the late bloom. The shrine, home to approximately 200 plum varieties and 6,000 trees, expects peak blooming from late February to late March. Source: Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
