The Kyushu Transport Bureau released the results of its survey for 2011 of the long-distance ferries operated by five companies on eight routes between Kyushu and the Kansai and Tokyo areas. The number of passengers declined by 1.4% from the previous year to 1.459 million, the 10th straight year-on-year drop. The bureau attributes the decline to the discount fares offered on expressways during vacation days and the falloff in travel after the Tohoku disaster.
