Kyushu Electric Power Co., Inc. (Kyuden) revealed delays in the development of anti-terrorism measures for its nuclear plants in Kyushu. In addition to a delay of approximately one year for the Sendai Power Plant, a delay for the Genkai Nuclear Plant has recently been announced without a fixed prospect for competition. After the nuclear incident during the Great East Japan Earthquake, the country’s Nuclear Regulation Authority required additional functions such as the ability to cool down reactors with a remote control system. While the original deadline was set for five years from the approval of the plans, the nation’s electricity companies are saying that more time is needed to complete related large scale construction. If Kyuden cannot meet the deadline, the reactors might be shut down as soon as March 2020. Source: NHK News Web, 4/18/2019
