Fukuoka Prefecture and Fukuoka City have reached an agreement on the division of an upcoming accommodation tax. In recent months, a sharp discord surfaced between the prefecture and the city over the introduction of the new tax and as a result, the two governments planned separate taxes on hotel guests and other accommodation facilities. The two leaders recently agreed on charging ¥200 per person (¥500 for a stay that cost ¥20,000 or above). While the city will be responsible for collecting the tax and it will keep ¥150 and ¥50 will be passed onto the prefecture. The taxation will start sometime early in the fiscal year of 2020. This will be the first double-accommodation taxation by a city and a prefecture. Source: Mainichi Shimbun, 5/24/2019
