DJ Police at Hakata Station

DJ police will be based at the intersection in front of JR Hakata Station to help people cross the road and prevent traffic accidents. The Fukuoka Prefectural Police will deploy officers at the station and give them microphones to call out basic road safety instructions to pedestrians. Plans are also in place to provide the service in English and Chinese. The Prefectural Police announced that out of the 139 deaths caused by traffic accidents last year, 41 were pedestrians who were involved in collisions at road crossings. The police hope that the new initiative will bring this figure down. The term DJ Police refers to practice of police standing on top of vehicles and using megaphones to communicate with crowds. The term became widely used in recent years when police used the strategy to communicate with crowds of young people in places like Shibuya, Tokyo. Source: TNC, 1/14/2018
