An assistant professor at Shobi University in Saitama University has calculated Avispa Fukuoka’s domestic economic impact to be ¥12.36 billion for the past year, about 70% of which was confined to Fukuoka Prefecture. The professor’s estimate took into account a range of factors, such as ticket sales, money spent by home and away supporters on transportation, media-related expenses and more. Avispa, which returned to the J1 League for the first time in five years, experienced an increase in spectatorship to the tune of 76,000 fans. The professor originally anticipated an economic ripple effect of about ¥3 billion, but in the course of his research found that per-capita spending by soccer fans was much higher than expected.
