False Online Allegations Target Fukuoka Mayoral Hopeful

RKB Mainichi Broadcasting has reported that false online allegations are targeting Ayano Sasaki, a prospective candidate in Fukuoka’s November 15 mayoral election. The posts linked her to Chinese espionage, apparently drawing on her past studies in China. According to RKB, Sasaki condemned the allegations, which she said had affected her family. An account responsible for circulating the claims reportedly apologized and deleted its posts, although the allegations continued to spread. In a separate September 26 statement, Sasaki said she had filed a police report after being informed of a threat against her life and would temporarily limit some public campaign activities. Experts interviewed by RKB encouraged voters to verify online information and compare candidates’ policies before casting their ballots.
