First Arrests for Drunk Cycling

On November 3, two individuals in Fukuoka and Okinawa were arrested on suspicion of drunk cycling, following the recent enactment of Japan’s revised Road Traffic Law on November 1, which introduced penalties for alcohol-impaired cycling. In Fukuoka’s Chuo Ward, a 28-year-old man collided with a parked vehicle. Police, who detected a high alcohol level in his breath test, detained him on the spot. Meanwhile, a 45-year-old man was arrested in Ishigaki, Okinawa, after police stopped him for riding without lights and found him intoxicated. Under the revised law, drunk cycling offenders now face up to three years in prison or fines up to 500,000 yen. Police are increasing public awareness and urging compliance with road safety rules.
