Former Bureaucrat Kazuhisa Takeuchi Elected as Kitakyushu Mayor in Four-Way Race

The Kitakyushu mayoral election was a four-way race among four newcomers after incumbent Mayor Kenji Kitahashi announced his retirement after serving four terms and 16 years. Takeuchi received 126,839 votes to defeat three candidates, including Yosuke Tsumori, a former bureaucrat at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, who was nominated by the four ruling and opposition parties in a tie. Meanwhile, voter turnout was 38.50%, 5.02 percentage points higher than the previous mayoral election in 2019, which was the lowest ever. Source: Kitakyushu City / RKB
