Kawabata Shotengai, a covered shopping arcade in central Fukuoka, will distribute ‘amabie’ designed hand-held fans to shoppers. The association created five-thousand pieces of the bamboo-made fans, hoping to ward off the new coronavirus and bring cheers to the district as it misses the cancelled festival of Hakata Gion Yamakasa. A Hakata-doll craftsman, Isamu Tanaka, created the original painting of the yokai ghost ‘amabie’ and a buddhist monk related to the origin of Hakata Gion Yamakasa. Source: Yomiuri
