Kumamoto Prefecture moved to strengthen a policy that gives local companies the opportunity to use the image of the popular mascot Kumamon for free when selling products abroad. The detailed conditions are being reviewed. The measure comes in response to criticism from Kumamoto-based businesses about the decision to allow overseas companies to use the Kumamon character on merchandise. In principle, the prefecture will only permit companies to sell Kumamon-themed products for free, if the company’s headquarters and manufacturing facilities are registered and based in the prefecture.
