The Fukuoka-based startup, Gigi, launched a new smartphone application to match people who want to eat out, those who are willing to pay for them to do so, and restaurants which want to support them. Inspired by a unique initiative originating from a local restaurant in Hokkaido, Gigi developed the concept of supporting young people, travelers and children who live with financial difficulties while contributing to the local economy. The application is named Gochimeshi, with “gochi” taken from “gochisosama” (a phrase to express appreciation for food) in Japanese. A two-month test will begin at thirty restaurants located mainly on Oyafuko-dori Ave. to find out how people will accept the system. Source: Nikkei Shimbun, 6/4/2019
