Fukuoka Born Yoshinori Ohsumi Wins Nobel Prize for Medicine

The 71 year old Japanese Cell Biologist, Yoshinori Ohsumi, was yesterday awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine for his work on autophagy (cell death). It is believed his work will provide foundations to new cures for cancer and dementia. Ohsumi was born here in Fukuoka on Feb. 9, 1945 before going on to study at the University Of Tokyo and start his career in molecular biology.
