Fukuoka Cherry Trees Flower 9 Days Later Than Last Year

The cherry blossoms in Fukuoka City have made their long-awaited debut, blooming 9 days later than last year and 5 days behind the typical schedule, the Fukuoka District Meteorological Observatory reported. This year’s first blossoms were observed on a Somei-Yoshino cherry tree in Chuo Ward shortly after 9:20 AM on March 27, marking the official start of the cherry blossom season in the area. The delay is attributed to higher than average temperatures in January and February, a shift from the early blooms observed in recent years. Shinpei Hashimoto of the Observatory’s Observation and Maintenance Division expressed relief and joy over the blossoms’ arrival, highlighting the anticipation felt by many. The Observatory forecasts that the Somei-Yoshino cherry trees will reach peak bloom within the next 7 to 10 days, promising a splendid display of springtime beauty for residents and visitors alike.
