Fukuoka Children’s Hospital will establish a Department of International Medicine this year. In light of the increase in foreign residents, primarily from Asia, the new department will provide foreign language training to hospital employees and coordinate hospital duties when foreign residents bring their children in to see doctors. According to Fukuoka City, there are 28,818 foreign residents in the city as of Sep. 30, up 10,000 from 10 years ago. The hospital does not currently have any staff whose sole responsibility is dealing with foreign patients. In the future, the department aims to accept foreign doctors for training and handle the dispatch of medical professionals overseas to provide guidance. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun 10/20
