In light of an incident in which a Reconstruction Agency official posted slanderous comments on the microblogging service Twitter, Fukuoka City Hall announced that it will formulate its own set of rules for city employees to follow when using social networking services (SNS). According to the City, Takeo City in Saga Prefecture has a similar SNS policy in place, but these kinds of policies are still rare in Kyushu. The City estimates that a good portion of its employees regularly use social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. While City Hall has not found any problematic posts, it decided to formulate this new policy because “depending on their content, even personal comments can lead to an organization-wide loss of credibility”.
