The construction of the Fukuoka City Gymnasium in Island City, Higashi-ku started on Feb. 1. It is planned to open in autumn 2018. It will be the largest arena in Western Japan and a hub for indoor sports. The new gymnasium, which is the size of four basketball courts, will have a main arena (the size of two basketball courts) with a 5,000 person capacity; a smaller, secondary arena; a dojo; an archery field and training room.
