Fukuoka Confirms Two More Cases of Deadly “Flesh-Eating Bacteria”

Fukuoka Prefecture has reported two new cases of a severe infection known as the “flesh-eating bacteria,” bringing this year’s total to 28 confirmed cases, exceeding the pace of last year. The bacterial infection, officially termed necrotizing fasciitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, presents initial symptoms such as swelling of limbs, fever, and low blood pressure. The disease, which can result in limb necrosis and acute renal failure, has a high mortality rate of about 30% and primarily affects individuals over the age of 30.
