Fukuoka Desalination Plant Boosts Water Output

The Fukuoka District Waterworks Agency announced it will increase production at the Mamizu Pia seawater desalination plant in Fukuoka City by 10,000 tons per day starting March 13. The facility currently produces about 30,000 tons of fresh water daily from seawater, but equipment upgrades now allow output to rise to approximately 40,000 tons. The additional volume equals the daily water consumption of around 50,000 residents. The expansion comes as reservoir levels in six dams in the Chikugo River system—an important water source for the Fukuoka metropolitan area—have continued to decline following months of low rainfall. As of March 12, storage levels had dropped to 11.9%, prompting a 55% intake restriction from the river system. Officials hope the increased desalination capacity will help conserve remaining dam reserves. Source: KBC News / TNC News
