Fukuoka Designer’s Mascots Chosen For Tokyo 2020

Japan has revealed the mascots of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. The two futuristic characters feature the games’ official logo on their heads and a checkered pattern across their outfits. Elementary school students from across the country helped select the winning pair created by Ryo Taniguchi, a 43-year-old designer from Fukuoka Prefecture. The names of the mascots will be decided later on in the year. Mr. Taniguchi previously designed the characters for the Ika no Osushi campaign, an initiative that the Hakata Police Station organized in order to help protect children from crime. In a recent interview, Mr. Taniguchi expressed surprise and delight that his design was selected. Source: RKB Mainichi Broadcasting Corp., 2/28/2018
