Broccoli growers in Fukuoka City held a quality alignment meeting on December 17 to standardize shipping criteria for size, shape, and appearance ahead of peak seasonal demand. Sixteen members of the JA Fukuoka City Broccoli Producers Group gathered at the Sawara Green Center for the monthly session. Producers reviewed examples of “A-grade” broccoli, defined by tightly packed, dome-shaped buds, while misshapen produce was classified as lower grade. Farmers reported that dry conditions and prolonged summer heat affected plant growth, limiting supply this season. While Fukuoka’s broccoli is valued for freshness due to its proximity to urban markets, reduced output has contributed to higher prices. Wholesale prices currently range from ¥120 to ¥140 per head, compared with around ¥75 during higher-yield periods. Source: KBC
