Ahead of the Third Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) in New York on March 4 (Japan time), a seminar on nuclear abolition was held in Fukuoka. Around 40 people participated in person and online.
Guest speaker Yuka Fujita, a former student peace ambassador and current leader of an international NGO, explained that there are over 9,000 operational nuclear warheads globally, with more than 80% owned by the U.S. and Russia. While Japan, as the only nation to have suffered nuclear attacks, has not ratified the treaty, she emphasized its role in shaping global norms against nuclear weapons.
A participant from Ogori City expressed admiration for the younger generation’s dedication to peace. Fujita stressed that nuclear issues affect everyone and urged people not to remain indifferent. Source: NHK
