Fukuoka City has begun installing a new type of bench in public parks, reducing or removing armrests and partitions to allow more flexible use. Traditional benches in the city have featured individual seat dividers, but the new models offer wider, flatter surfaces suitable for parents with children or those needing to lie down temporarily.
Examples include a four-meter bench in Jonan Ward with a single central armrest and open sides, and other benches with handrails instead of fixed seat dividers to assist sitting and standing. Previously common one-meter-square benches divided into four seats now come undivided.
According to city officials, the change was driven by community feedback seeking more family-friendly and inclusive park amenities. Fukuoka City plans to continue evaluating user needs as part of future urban design initiatives. Source: NHK
