Fukuoka International School Names New Director

Kazuo Oniki, Fukuoka Financial Group advisor and former president of Shinwa Bank, was appointed as the Executive Director of Fukuoka International School (FIS) on May 22. The first new Executive Director in 11 years, he will replace Kenichi Nakamuta. The appointment is for two years. He told a Nishinippon Shimbun reporter, “FIS plays a vital role in internationalizing Fukuoka and helps the city attract foreign companies. Enrollment of Western students has dipped since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008, but I would like to boost our numbers. I aim to run the school without relying on donations from local companies, and will focus my efforts on starting English conversation classes for companies…. as a replacement for donations.” FIS was founded in 1972 after the closure of the school affiliated with the US military base. The school moved to its current location in 1990. In 2007, it began offering an International Baccalaureate course. There are currently more than 200 students from 20 countries and regions including Japan enrolled at all levels from kindergarten to high school. Source: Nishinippon Shimbun, May 30
