Fukuoka Introduces Partnership Oath System For Sexual Minority Couples

Fukuoka Prefecture has introduced a “partnership oath system” that recognizes sexual minority couples as having a relationship equivalent to marriage. The “partnership oath system” recognizes sexual minority couples who cannot be married by law as a relationship analogous to marriage. Applicants should make a reservation by phone or email to the department in charge of the prefecture at least two weeks before the oath date. On the day of the oath, the prefecture will issue an “Oath Receipt Card” in about an hour, such as signing and submitting the oath in a private room within the prefectural office. By presenting the card, you will be able to receive the same treatment as a legal couple when applying to move into prefectural housing or explaining your medical condition at a prefectural hospital.
