Fukuoka Issues 40 Bicycle Traffic Tickets

Fukuoka Prefectural Police issued 40 bicycle traffic tickets during the first month after Japan introduced its new “blue ticket” enforcement system for cycling violations on April 1. According to police data through May 6, the most common violation was failure to stop at intersections, accounting for 18 cases. Other violations included riding against traffic, smartphone use while cycling, and defective brakes. Eleven tickets were issued to riders aged 18 or younger, including seven high school students. Police also reported that bicycle-related traffic accidents in the prefecture fell by 57 cases year-on-year to 161 incidents during the same period. Authorities said public awareness of cycling rules appears to have increased following the stricter enforcement measures. Source: NHK News / TNC News
