Fukuoka Launches Plastic Pharmacy Bottle Recycling

To reduce plastic waste, an initiative has begun in Fukuoka Prefecture to recycle plastic bottles used for pills and other items that are often thrown away at pharmacies. The Fukuoka Prefecture Recycling Research and Commercialization Center, in cooperation with the Pharmaceutical Association of Japan, has started this initiative at a total of approximately 480 pharmacies in three areas. The bottles are then taken to a supplier’s factory, where they are crushed and melted down to be turned into plastic material. The raw materials are then sold to manufacturers, who are considering recycling them into plastic products such as dispensing trays that can be used in pharmacies. An estimated 80 tons of plastic pill and powder bottles have been incinerated annually in Fukuoka Prefecture. The prefecture hopes to increase the number of areas where they can be collected in the future. Source: Fukuoka Prefecture / NHK
