Ashiya-machi in Fukuoka Prefecture will restore Saturday classes in the municipality’s three primary schools and one junior high school starting on May 12. Saturday classes began to be phased nationwide out in 1992 and were eliminated altogether in 2002, but concerns have been growing about academic ability since then. Schools in the Tokyo Metro District and Tochigi Prefecture have resumed Saturday classes, but Ashiya-machi will be the first municipality in Kyushu to do so.
