Fukuoka Population Declines Slightly, Foreign Residents Increase

As of January 1, 2024, the total population of Fukuoka Prefecture was approximately 5,095,000, marking a decrease of about 9,500 from the previous year. This decline is attributed to natural population decrease, where the number of deaths surpasses the number of births. Despite this overall decline, the foreign resident population has continued to grow, increasing by over 10,000, indicating a sustained upward trend.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the combined population of Japanese and foreign residents in Fukuoka Prefecture stood at 5,095,379 as of January 1, 2024. This represents a 0.19% decrease from the same time last year, amounting to a reduction of 9,542 people. The decline is in line with trends seen in other prefectures, where the aging population and low birth rates contribute to natural decrease.

However, Fukuoka is experiencing social population growth, with the number of people moving into the prefecture exceeding those moving out. The social increase rate stands at 0.36%, the sixth highest in the country. This influx is driven by Fukuoka’s attractiveness as a business and educational hub. Fukuoka City saw a population increase of 12,521, the second highest in Japan after Osaka. This growth highlights Fukuoka’s role as a key urban center attracting both domestic and international residents.

In contrast, Kitakyushu experienced a significant population decline of 8,155, the second largest decrease nationwide. The city’s challenges include an aging population and economic shifts away from traditional heavy industries. Kasuga Town recorded a natural population increase, with 153 more births than deaths, ranking second among towns and villages nationwide in terms of natural growth. The foreign resident population in Fukuoka Prefecture grew by 11.45% compared to the previous year, adding 10,079 new residents. This reflects Fukuoka’s growing international community and its appeal to foreign nationals for work and study opportunities. Source: Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications
